Drug seizures hit record in 2005, with the Anti-Drugs Police squad seizing more heroin, cocaine and ecstasy than in the previous ten years. Last year the police seized 15.5 kilograms of heroin, 6.4 kilograms of cocaine, nearly 17,300 Ecstasy pills and 21.5 kilograms of cannabis. Additionally 93 people were charged with drug trafficking last year. A further 333 persons were charged with drug possession.
Statistics obtained by The Sunday Times also reveled how a total of 475 drug raids were held and 731 people were arrested for drug-related offences.
2005’s total cannabis haul was the third largest in the past ten years. In 2003 59 kilograms of cannabis were seized, followed by 35 kilograms seized in 2004.
Justice Minister Tonio Borg stated earlier this month that in the first 11 months of 2005, the police seized 15 kilos of heroin drug and 6.4 kilograms of cocaine. He added that 1.88 kilograms of cannabis grass, 5.25 kilograms of cannabis resin, three cannabis plants, and 15,309 ecstasy pills were also confiscated during the same period.
