Well-known radio broadcaster Charles Arrigo passed away at the age of 76 late on Monday morning. He was rushed to St Luke’s Hospital after he suffered from a heart attack while he was at the buildings of the Public Broadcasting Services. He died a few minutes later.

Charles Arrigo’s death leaves a void in the broadcasting scene, in which he played a major part since 1947. During his career, Mr Arrigo was the commentator of various significant events that occurred in Malta, including Malta’s Independence in 1964 and when Malta was made Republic in 1974. He was also the first Maltese television announcer in 1962.

In an interview, Mr Arrigo had told Malta Today that since childhood, he never dreamt of becoming a broadcaster. He explained that he had been chosen following a call for applications with Rediffusion. He added that he accepted the post since was still young and needed to earn some money during the summer.

Soon after he started working with Rediffusion, Mr Arrigo had been sent in the United Kingdom to train with the BBC. When the training finished the broadcasting company asked him to work with them. Mr Arrigo had accepted their request since he had always admired the station.

During his life, Charles Arrigo also took part in various theatrical productions and TV dramas. Most recently was seen as Il-Kurunell in the TV series Villa Sunset.
