Three 40-foot containers on transpishment to South Africa and which originated from the Far East were objects of detailed scrutiny after strong suspicions by the Customs officers.

The officers indicated that there were discrepancies between the containers’ manifest and the actual cargo inside the containers. These containers were chosen amongst a large number of containers which were being observed and examined during their journey towards Malta by the Maltese Customs Officers.

The exercise of unloading the containers yielded fruitful results since the containers were found to contain 26,864 pairs of Nike sports shoes and 510 boxes of Nancy plastic sandals. Further investigations revealed that the footwear were all counterfeit.

The merchandise is currently being kept by the Customs until the court decides on the counterfeit products' fate.
