65 tragic deaths in 2005

During 2005, there were 65 tragic deaths, a decrease of eight deaths when compared to the previous year. Whilst replying to a parliamentary question made by Member of Parliament David Agius, Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Tonio Borg said that last year there were three murders, 18 traffic accident fatalities, 17 suicides, six cases of overdose and 21 other fatal accidents.

Tonio Borg also stated that 536 tragic deaths took place during the last eight years. 56 deaths occurred in 1998, 68 in 1999, 74 in 2000, 76 in 2001, 57 in 2002, 67 in 2003 and 73 took place in 2004.

Between the year 1998 and 2005, the highest number of tragic deaths was related to suicides (157) followed by other types of fatal accidents (149). There were 128 cases of fatal traffic accidents, 48 murders and 44 cases of overdose.
