A large number of illegal immigrants held various protests both at the Armed Forces of Malta detention centres in Hal Far and also in Safi. Currently, the situation is back to normal as the illegal immigrants returned to their tents after they were allowed to speak to members of the Press through a small number of representatives.

The illegal immigrants at the Safi barracks protested against the excessive length of detention. Some of them had their face covered and others were holding posters saying ‘Freedom’.

Moreover, on Wednesday morning, 80 illegal immigrants fled from the Hal Far detention centre. However, the AFM soldiers and the police intercepted them near the Malta International Airport where a protest was being held. Following long negotiations, the authorities convinced the illegal immigrants to return to the Hal Far barracks. This situation created traffic congestion in the area, in fact the police closed a number of roads.
