Carnival floats damaged by strong winds

Some Carnival floats were damaged by the strong winds that hit the Maltese islands during Thursday night. The Carnival celebrations are scheduled to start on Friday evening at Freedom Square and Republic Street in Valletta.

A spokesman for the Malta Council for Culture and Arts confirmed with MaltaMedia News that on Friday, the Dancing Competitions will be held as scheduled in Freedom Square with the participation of Competitive Dancing Companies in Sections A, B, C and D. With regards the defile, the small carnival floats will not take part on Friday, however, there will be the popular King Carnival.

Malta Weather Services Director Mark Vella Gera told MaltaMedia News that the strong winds are currently Force eight but are expected to decrease slowly throughout the day. He added that the winds will be southwesterly Force four on Friday night, while the rain is also becoming more isolated.

Mr Vella Gera also explained that very strong Westerly winds throughout Thursday night (gusting Force 10 at Mellieha) during the night and is now moving eastwards. These were produced by the low pressure system that was centred over the Maltese Islands on Thursday with a low pressure of just 887hPa.

Meanwhile, members from the Civil Protection Department were called to carry out various operations in various locations, including the clearing up of debris from trees and telephone poles that fell off on the streets. The CPD advised the general public to exercise caution.
