The US authorities are demanding the extradition of a Maltese man over child abuse charges. 56-year-old Lewis Muscat is being accused of abusing children under age, mainly a girl whom he has been abusing for around three years. The Court of Magistrates in Malta ordered the issuing of an arrest warrant in the man’s regard.

The man, who has been living in the United States for 40 years, is currently in Malta. Lawyer Dr Donatella Frendo Dimech who led the prosecution stated that Mr Muscat fled from the US when the court started the legal procedures against him.

The defense lawyer Dr Noel Bianco requested bail for the accused, however, the prosecution did not agree since Mr Muscat has suicidal tendencies and because he could easily flee from Malta.

The court presided over by Magistrate Dr Abigail Lofaro rejected the defense plea and requested the Director of Corradino Correctional Facility to exercise all the required measures due to Mr Muscat’s suicidal tendencies.
