Police officer jailed over theft

A 30-year-old police officer of Qormi was sentenced to nine months in prison suspended to one year and a half after admitting that he stole Lm128 from the Police General Headquarters on Wednesday 1st March.

Antonio Magro resigned from the position of police officer few hours before he was arraigned in court on Friday morning. He was found guilty of committing the crime to the detriment of the Police Corps.

The prosecution was led by Inspectors Simon Galea and Kenneth Haber.

In turn, a Russian sailor was arraigned in court accused of attacking and resisting three police officers on Thursday night. Vasily Maslov, 43, was granted bail against a personal guarantee of Lm250 and a deposit of another Lm250. The court ordered the accused to hand over the passport until the legal procedures against him were finished.

The accused pleaded not guilty of attacking Sergeant Reuben Pace and Police Constables Keith Azzopardi u Joseph Mizzi.

Mr Maslov was also charged with threatening the police officers, causing several damages to the detriment of the Government of Malta and of breaching the public order.
