Following the recent developments regarding the exercise of exclusive rights to broadcast sports content, in particular football games, the Consumer and Competition Division has, in conjunction with the Malta Communications Authority, the Broadcasting Authority and the Commerce Division, held various meetings with the operators concerned in order to appraise the changing broadcasting scenario and to take action should this be warranted.

In view that exclusive agreements could raise competition concerns, the Office for Fair Competition (OFC) is investigating the case and if found that an infringement of the Competition Act has taken place it will take the most expeditious actions to stop such an infringement.

Meanwhile, in relation to the queries raised by the consumer, the Consumer and Competition Division is currently investigating the potential implications in terms of the Consumer Affairs Act.
