A letter sent by the Enemalta Corporation Chairman to the Chairman of the Malta Resouces Authority, was published on Wednesday by the Ministry for Investment, Industry and Information technology, in which Enemalta Corporation requested an audit from an independent firm in order to verify the calculations of the fuel surcharge. The audit is to confirm that the fuel surcharge is only applicable to oil that is needed for the generation of electricity, which Enemalta Corporation imports from other countries.

This measure was taken in order to reduce the speculations that were circulating regarding the surcharge calculations. Moreover, to further ensure public confidence in the surcharge operations, Enemalta Corporation requested that the Authority verifies how the surcharge calculations were reached before they are announced.

The Ministry stated that the surcharge was calculated on a formula tied to the shift in international fuel prices and was not connected to Enemalta's financial situation or internal affairs.
