1,061 granted humanitarian protection in 2005

In 2005, there were 1,060 illegal immigrants who applied for a refugee status. Of these, 481 were granted humanitarian protection and seven were granted refugee status.

These figures were given in parliament by Justice and Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg, whilst replying to a parliamentary question made by Nationalist Party MP Jason Azzopardi.

During the previous year, 859 persons applied for a refugee status. Eight of them were recognised as refugees and 548 illegal immigrants were granted humanitarian protection.
