51-year-old Carmel Camilleri from Mosta was arraigned in court on Saturday afternoon and charged with the murder of Baron Frank Sant Cassia, which took place 18 years ago. Camilleri was arraigned in court with urgency after he admitted his involvement in the crime. The incident took place in Mġarr on the 27th October 1988 when the 68-year-old Baron was gunned down near his residence.
The Baron’s body was discovered near a rubble wall, not far away from Zamitello Castle where he resided. Camilleri was first contacted by the police in 1994 after the Criminal Investigations Department received information about the man’s involvement in the killing. Although he initially denied any involvement in the case, he later admitted that it was he who had shot the elderly Baron in the head. Camilleri also led the Police to the crime scene and explained his version of the events which took place on the evening of the 27th October 1988, at around 1800CET.
It is thought that Camilleri is not the only person involved in the shooting. It is furthermore believed that Camilleri was the executer of the murder and other persons are expected to be investigated in relation to the case.
Camilleri was charged with shooting a fire arm in Baron Frank Sant Cassia's direction with the intent of killing him. He was additionally charged with possessing an unlicensed fire arm.
Granted the sensitive nature of the case, the Court ruled that Camilleri should be kept under preventative arrest. Lawyers Angelo Farrugia and Edward Gatt appeared for the accused. They requested the court to appoint a psychiatrist in order to establish if Camilleri’s mental health has suffered since his arrest.
The Baron's murder was initially linked to an issue of property ownership that was worth tens of millions of liri. However amid much speculation, the exact motive behind the killing is yet to be established.
