The Maltese language version of the Operating System (OS) Windows XP has been launched in collaboration with Microsoft and the Ministry for Investment, Industry and Information Technology.

Mr. Andy Abbar, official representative of Microsoft, also maintained that in the pipeline is the development of a Maltese spellchecker which is to be included in the new Microsoft Office expected out in 2007.

The Minister Austin Gatt stated that introducing a Maltese version of this OS will help to decrease the digital divide that exists for those who feel alienated from technology due to language barriers. He also said that there is an initiative to include more technological features which will be relevant to the Maltese, as has been done with Maltese keyboards and other advances in integrating the Maltese language into information technology.

Dr. Gatt appealed for the help of the public, especially teachers and educators, to use the new system so that any errors may be reported and amended.
