Italian authorities seized two tonnes of pure cannabis estimated to be worth around 200 million Euros according to market value. The drug haul was found onboard a Maltese-registered trawler named the ‘Carmelo Padre’.

The trawler was stopped by Italian Coastguards during a surveillance watch. The trawler was conspicuous because it didn’t have its lights on and was seen to be working alongside a dinghy in the darkness.

Two Sicilian nationals who reside in Malta were arrested and are being held for questioning.

The trawler was en route from Tunisia, Malta and Italy. Maltese authorities are collaborating with their Italian counterparts in the investigations.

A press release by the Police Commissioner later today will yield more information.
