Archbishop Mons. Joseph Mercieca stated that he is willing to make way for a new Bishop, however he added that he will only do so once his successor is nominated. Speaking during a meeting between the Presbyterian Council and the Diocesan Pastoral Council last Saturday, the Archbishop stated that his conscience led him to make such a decision. On the other hand, according to maltarightnow.com, the Apostolic Nunciature confirmed that there have been no nominations for a new Archbishop.
The Apostolic Nunciature did not confirm whether the process for the nomination of a new Archbishop has started, maltarightnow.com reported. Archbishop Mons. Joseph Mercieca, submitted his resignation briefly after turning 75 in 2003, however no nominations for a new Archbishop have been made so he has therefore remained in office.
Earlier this month, It-Torca revealed that Archbishop Mons. Joseph Mercieca might possibly retain his position until he is 80, following Pope Benedict XVI's recent proposal to put forward the age at which bishops renounce their office.
