St. Benedict’s College in Kirkop has a new secondary school building which was begun in March 2003 and was inaugurated today by Prime Minister Dr. Lawrence Gonzi.
The new school is three storeys high and has area of 13,000 square metres which is recreational land for the children. The school has 42 classromms, 35 resource rooms, 9 science laboratories, 9 technology laboratories, 8 computer laboratories with Wireless connection, business study rooms, art and technical drawing rooms, and other rooms for administrative purposes. The school also includes drama and audio-visual rooms and a sick room. The school is fully accessible for people with special needs.
Sports facilities include a seven-a-side synthetic turf football pitch and an athletic track.
There are four reservoirs that hold up to 800,000 gallons of water as well as a sub-station that will provide electricity. The school will be provided by three water systems that will provide drinking water, water for use within the school and water for irrigation. These will come from the Water Services Corporation, water that is collected on the school’s roofs and the third kind will come from the yards and grounds of the college.
The building is equipped with a Faraday’s Cage which protects it from lightning strikes, that could result in structural electrical damage.
T5 Technology was used for the lights of the school in an effort to reduce consumption as well as protecting users from possible shocks.
The school is equipped with a state-of-the-art fire alarm system as well as Closed Circuit Television (CCTV).
The college is still growing as a hall, canteen, changing rooms and offices are to be built in the coming months as well as a sports complex similar to the one found at Cottonera. The work is expected to be completed in a year and a half.
St. Benedict’s College will be open to the public on Sunday May 7 where various activities will be organised by the school, starting at 0930 CET with Mass.
