The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM) condemned the arson attack on the private residence of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. The IGM described as cowardice this act of vandalism. The IGM said that the arson attacks on journalists will not intimidate them. On the contrary, it increases the determination to report without fear these coward acts.
This fire is yet another incident in the recent spate of arson attacks that occurred in the past few weeks on a number of vehicles and private residences.
The arson attack took place in Triq il-Bidnija, Mosta early Saturday morning at around 03:15CET. The persons who set the door alight are still unknown.
Preliminary investigations revealed that several tyres were put in front of the door and set on fire. The fire was controlled and extinguished by the house’s residents. The residence facade was extensively damaged but no one was injured in this incident. On duty Magistrate was informed of the case and several experts were appointed to assist in the inquiry. The Police are investigating.
The IGM’s Council expressed its solidarity with Ms Caruana Galizia and her family. The Council said that this is the second attack on a journalist’s private residence in a few days. In fact, a few days ago Malta Today’s editor, Mr Saviour Balzan was also victim of an arson attack on his residence.
