Another boatload of irregular immigrants were rescued in the early hours of Thursday morning at around 0430 CET. The boat, which was carrying 30 immigrants, came into Benghajsa in Birzebbugia. Further to those who arrived on Wednesday, the number of illegal immigrants arriving in Malta has exceeded 300 in two days.

The 300 illegal immigrants reached Malta and were aided by the Armed Forces of Malta. These were then sent to the designated detention centres.

This latest group of immigrants were brought to shore aboard an AFM patrol boat and are expected to be transferred to a detention centre later in the day.

Meanwhile, in Court on Wednesday, two men, Khaled Masoud Loulad, 45, from Algeria and Farah Abdelmagid Abduldaim, 26, of Sudanese nationality, were charged with attempting to bring illegal immigrants to Malta.

The prosecution, led by Inspector Sandro Zarb, claimed that the men tried to bring people into the country illegally on June 24, 2006.

The mean pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them, yet were not granted bail by Magistrate Dr Dennis Montebello.

Dr. Richard Sladden appeared for the defendants.
