An internet campaign to "rock the Eurovision" is trying to get all sorts of people to vote for Finnish hard rock band Lordi at this year's song contest. Run through the website VoteLordi.org, the campaign urges Internet users to "make Eurovision history" by voting for an act that is unlike any other ever seen at this annual festival of pop music.
On Wednesday afternoon, the website added a Maltese version of its main message, directed at those who dislike the Eurovision Song Contest. The message is also available in English, French, German, Spanish, Finnish, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Hebrew, Portugese, Italian, and Greek among other languages. More languages are expected to appear on the website before Thursday's semi-final.
The message is written in flowery prose, indicating a tongue-in-cheek approach not only towords the Eurovision but also for the campaign itself. More than anything, it seems that the origizers of the campaign are aware that there goal, to make Lordi the winners of this year's contest, may not be successful.
The main strategy advised by the website is to encourage people to forward the message to everyone they know via email, blogs, phone, SMS, IRC, and Instant Messaging. Another strategy is to organize Eurovision parties during the voting period. The basic idea is to change the look and feel of the Eurovision by having a heavy metal band with a monster show win the contest.
VoteLordi.org is not the bands official website nor is it in any way affiliated with the band or its record label Sony BMG.
Following the first full rehearsal for Thursday's semi-final, there were mixed reactions to Lordi's spectacular rendition of Hard Rock Hallelujah.
After watching the rehearsal at the Olympic Stadium, Maltese entertainer and Eurovision veteran Claudette Pace told MaltaMedia.com that she was unimpressed by the act. "If they repeat what we saw during this rehearsal, I don't think they'll make it to the final."
In contrast, Where's Everybody? producers Mark Vassallo and Pablo Micallef, who watched the rehearsal on a big screen TV in the Eurovision Press Centre, about 100 meters away from the stage, looked visibly impressed by what they saw. "The pyrotechnics Lordi are bringing to the stage are like nothing I've ever seen before at the Eurovision," Micallef told MaltaMedia.com. "They are truly spectacular!"
During the first semi-final rehearsal, Fabrizio Faniello and the official Maltese delegation were taking a sightseeing tour around Athens and neighbouring Greek islands after trying out his costume for the first time.
