On Saturday Malta obtained the worst result in the history of its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest with singer Fabrizio Faniello finishing last with a mere one point. Finnish hard rock band Lordi won the 51st edition held in Athens, Greece.
Albania gave us the one point and that came towards the end of the announcement of results.
As the votes rolled in for Finland, MaltaMedia's creative director Toni Sant exclaimed quite loudly: "I told you so!" As for Malta's placing, he added, "only Xtruppaw can bring the Eurovision to Malta."
Until Satuday the worst result had been obtained in 2003 with 25th (penultimate) place and a mere four points but two years later Malta came second with Chiara. It seems this is a recurrent trend as the bad placing of 2003 followed Ira Losco’s excellent second place a year before.
Mid-way through the voting Malta had not gathered a single vote, languishing in the last places together with Israel and France. However these two countries had gathered a few points at two-thirds of the way contrary to Malta which remained with nothing until the Albanians felt pity.
Morale in the Maltese camp was high after the very good last dress rehearsal on Saturday afternoon.
Fabrizio’s splendid performance on the night did not serve much as Malta once again was penalised by countries voting for their neighbours. Norway, Sweden and Finland all gave 10 and 12 points to each other, so did the Baltic States, the former Soviet Republics and the former Yugoslav republics.
The Maltese public gave 12 points to Switzerland which was represented by Maltese singer Keith Camilleri.
Fabrizio and the Maltese delegation are expected back to Malta on Sunday night together with hundreds of Maltese fans who went to support the singer.
