Maltasong chairman Robert Abela has filed a suit against Maltastar journalist David Vella following the latter’s article entitled Eyewitnesses swear Malta song chairman was drunk that was published last Wednesday.
The article reported extracts from a copy of three official affidavits made by three persons who were in Greece and who allegedly declared that on Eurovision night, the Maltasong Board chairperson was seen with a pint of beer in his hand.
This is the second libel suit that Abela filed this week. On Thursday he filed a suit against Grace Borg, ex-Maltasong chairman.
The suit came about after a loud and public spectacle that took place at the airport when the Eurovision assembly arrived in Malta from Athens. Borg made defamatory comments in front of a crowd of people who were at the airport to greet the participants, and was filmed by PBS cameras. Her claims were then broadcast on Bondi+.
She claimed that Keith Camilleri, whom she was representing, and who sang as part of Switzerland’s group Six4One, was unfairly treated by the Maltese delegation and by Tourism Minister, Dr. Francis Zammit Dimech.
Borg publicly alleged on camera that Abela was drunk in the green room during the festival, and that Keith Camilleri was ignored upon arrival.
Abela's suit addresses both Borg and TVM, and Borg is requested to pay libel damages by Abela's lawyers.
