Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett died just a few days before a memorable concert by another Floyd co-founder, Roger Waters was held in Malta. Syd Barrett who quit the band three years after it was formed, died at the age of 60.
The announcement of Barrett’s death was made mere hours after Waters’ concert at the Luxol Car Park. Roger Waters' did not speak of his former band-member passing during the concert.
According to the BBC Syd Barrett passed away after complications arising from diabetes. The band's spokeswoman said "He died very peacefully a couple of days ago."
Barrett’s death was confirmed by his family. Barrett's funeral will be a private one, held for members of his family.
Pink Floyd's 1975 track "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", from the album "Wish You Were Here", is widely believed to be a tribute to Barrett. These two tracks, along with Pink Floyd’s album “Dark Side of the Moon” were performed by Roger Waters in a concert in Malta on Monday. The concert, which lasted more than two hours, also featured Waters' highly-successful 'In The Flesh'.
A couple of days before Roger Waters’ phenomenal concert at the Luxol Car Park in Pembroke, his former band member Roger Keith Barrett, better known as ‘Syd’, passed away. Waters did not mention this sad news during the concert and the official announcement came only around mid-day on Tuesday.
MaltaMedia founder and creative director, a fan of Syd Barrett for many years, released a tribute blog entry soon after the announcement of Barrett's passing. Although he didn't comment directly on his blog, he told MaltaMedia News, "this is very sad...Syd Barrett was one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. He left us long long ago and although he only died just a few days ago fans have mourned him for decades."
