An exhibition has been launched to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, celebrated on Saturday. Most victims of domestic violence are women, but it can also happen to men, children, the elderly and those with mental and physical health problems.
The exhibition includes information on the services provided by the Shelters, Għabex, Merħba Bik, Qalb ta’ Gesù and Tereza Spinelli. It also gives the opportunity to the women and children who are residents of the shelters to exhibit drawings, crafts and so forth, positively acknowledging their talents and abilities.
Students from secondary schools aged between 14 and 15 years were also invited to contribute by providing paintings. Education plays an important role in the elimination of domestic violence. This subject is in fact included in the Personal Social Development syllabus.
Another initiative taken by Government agency Appoġġ is the publication of a leaflet in Maltese which explains domestic violence in clear terms and specifies where one can get help from. The leaflet details the three main services offered by Appoġġ that deal directly with domestic violence. Persons visiting the exhibition can collect a copy of the leaflet.
The exhibition is open to the general public at the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity, Palazzo Ferreria, 310 Republic Street, Valletta until 11th December, from 0900CET to 1700CET from Monday to Friday.
Inaugurating the exhibition, Minister for the Family and Social Solidarity Dolores Cristina said that “Today is a very special day for all of us in Malta and Gozo, since it is the first year that we can commemorate this day having in place a strong legislation which protects the victims, particularly the children, even the unborn. Domestic violence is a scourge which hits all societies, across all levels of society. Nobody is immune. Malta now has solid legislation in place which protects against this grievous act.”
