State-of-the-art showcases are presently being installed at the Gozo Museum of Archaeology to permanently house the prehistoric collection, including unique archaeological artefacts, unearthed during excavations at the Gozo Stone Circle in Xagħra.
These showcases, having shatter-proof glass displays and a climate-controlled environment, offer maximum protection and security possible for these unique artefacts that date back to the Neolithic, Temple Period and Bronze Age respectively (c. 5200 – 700 BC). The new prehistory section will greatly enhance the visitor’s experience at the museum through an improved presentation of the island’s rich and unique prehistoric heritage.
Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo said that these showcases will allow artefacts from the Gozo Stone Circle, which are of world importance, to be put on permanent display in Gozo for the first time. They were exhibited briefly for one month in the late 1990s, following which, a tour of major European cities including London, Florence, Prague and Amsterdam ensued. The new display cases project is being carried out under the Structural Funds for Malta 2004-2006, specifically under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The Gozo Museum of Archaeology established at Casa Bondi’ within the Citadel, is one of the museums being operated and managed by Heritage Malta. It displays important artefacts found in Gozo including those from the Ġgantija temples and other prehistoric sites, as well as Roman and Punic artefacts and items from the medieval period.
The return of the Gozo Stone Circle prehistoric artefacts is being complemented by a modernisation project of the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, by the conservation of all exhibits on display, and by a revision of the storyline. These initiatives are being carried out by Heritage Malta.
The new display cases project is being carried out by the Ministry for Gozo in close collaboration with Heritage Malta.
