With less than week to go, preparations are hard under way for the Notte Magica, to be held in Valletta on Saturday 6th January. In contrast to the Notte Bianca, the emphasis on this occasion is leisure and entertainment and the events that will be held throughout the capital city will cater for all age groups. The musical programme will encompass diverse genres, including Rock, Pop, Folk, Big Band Jazz, Rhythm & Blues as well as Classical music, all being staged in Valletta ’s main squares and courtyards.
Stages will be set up in Freedom Square , Main Guard ( St George’s Square ), Great Siege Square , St John’s Square and in Merchant Street . Furthermore, concerts will also be held in the courtyards of Auberge D’Italie and that of the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise as well as in the ruins of the Old Opera House.
Entertainment will also be provided in by a large number of street performers. In addition to this, three local bands, Banda Cittadina King’s Own, Filarmonica Nazzionale La Vallette and Banda Cittadina Sliema will be marching through the main streets of Valletta , further contributing to the special festive atmosphere.
The musical events have been devised to feature artists starting their sets at different times to allow people to mill from one activity to another, enabling them to enjoy all the artists’ performances in the various locations. Ira Losco, Winter Moods, Scream Daisy, Fire, Rug and Spiteri Lucas Band & Friends are guaranteed to woo the audiences on the night, though one should give special mention to Irish band The Commitments who are sure to make it an unforgettable evening with their blend of Rhythm & Blues and a repertoire that mixes some of Soul’s legendary classics. Freddie Mizzi and his Big Band, George Curmi, better known as Il-Puse, Nafra and the Junior College Orchestra will also be performing, while Zoo will be presenting a number of sketches created specially for the night
The local shopping community has been urged to create special offers for those wishing to shop on the night. Special arrangements are being made in conjunction with all transport authorities, and those attending are strongly advised to make use of the Public Transport System.
