Germanwings, a German major low-cost airline, will start operations to Malta in March 2007, according to Malta International Airport. The airline will fly to Malta from two of its bases in Germany, these being Cologne and Stuttgart, with two weekly flights from each airport, one on Tuesday and another on Saturday.

Through this link Maltese travellers will have more options, at considerably low fares.

Besides the introduction of two new regions in Germany, passengers will also be able to purchase tickets to destinations such as Edinburgh, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo and St. Petersburg, all of which are served by Germanwings through their Cologne base.

Likewise, the new routes will serve to attract more German tourists to Malta.

In a statement, Malta International Airport added that Germanwings has confirmed its operation throughout the summer season 2007 until the end of October in view to pursuing an all-year-round operation after this period. The airline sells seats exclusively online and as from 1st September 2006 it has launched its selling of seats to and from Malta at prices starting from LM 8.17c (US$ 24.28c,€19) one-way.

On Monday Minister for Tourism and Culture Francis Zammit Dimech announced that the government accepted all bids submitted in response to the call for low cost carriers to operate new routes to Malta. Bids were submitted by two companies, easyJet and Ryanair.
