In August 2006, outbound passengers increased by 3.7% to a total of 31,129. Over 80% of the increase was attributable to departures by catamaran, the majority being same-day visitors. Of the total Maltese passengers registered during the month under review, 26,295 traveled by air, implying virtually no change from August 2005.

In turn, during the first eight months of 2006, the number of Maltese passengers departing by air and sea amounted to 167,851, an increase of 7.1% over the same period a year ago.

In the period under review, the most frequent destination was Italy, accounting for 30.6 per cent of the total number of Maltese traveling abroad by air and sea.

The National Statistics Office (NSO) reported that in the first eight months of 2006, male outbound passengers significantly exceeded female ones, the former accounting for 59.8% of the total. The greatest proportion of outbound passengers - 46.3% – comprised passengers aged between 25 and 44 years, followed by those in the 45-64 age bracket.

Adversely, statistics published by the NSO last month had revealed that for the month of August 2006 inbound tourism dropped by 7.9% over the preceding year.
