Inbound tourists declined by 10% in October 2006 from the same month last year, leading to a drop of 5.1% for the first ten months of this year. In the latter period, tourist expenditure decreased by 1.6% in spite of a 3.7% increase in per capita expenditure.
Tourist departures in October 2006 were estimated at 116,427. This was underpinned by fewer tourists mainly from the United Kingdom, Germany and France, contrasted by moderate increases from Switzerland, Sweden and Russia. The decrease in tourists during the month reflected primarily a drop in holiday makers.
Departures of inbound tourists during the first ten months of 2006 are estimated at 1,006,214, according to a report by the National Statistics Office (NSO). In line with developments during the month of October, this decrease mainly reflected fewer tourists from the United Kingdom, Germany and France. Tourists from Italy, Russia and Denmark were estimated to have increased during the period.
The ongoing frontier survey of tourists departing by air indicates a 4.3% decrease in total nights spent during the period January-October 2006. Furthermore total tourist expenditure during the period under review is estimated at Lm384.5 million, a decrease of 1.6% over the same period last year
