In response to the government's proposals on low cost airlines, the Malta Chamber for Small and Medium Enterprises (GRTU) said that such proposals are a step in the right direction but that the government is not as yet conscious enough of the big problems being faced by the tourism sector.

The proposals should have been discussed beforehand by all, the GRTU said, while it stated that the proposals set by the operators Ryanair should have been included too.

The GRTU said it considered the airport tax rates as being too high and insisted these can be decreased.

Another flaw in the goverment's proposals according to the GRTU is that these apply only for a short period and are applicable only to airports that favour low-cost airlines.

The GRTU stated that the government should have taken more seriously those who had offered to guarantee a substanial rise in the number of tourists to Malta and who were prepared to bind themselves with a performance bond that guarantees that they bring over tourists thanks to the low-cost tariffs.

The Malta Chamber for Small and Medium Enterprises appealed to the government for airlines that are more financially appealing for both tourists and Maltese alike.
