Ryanair announces routes to Malta

Low-cost airline Ryanair officially announced the commencement of three new routes to Malta International Airport from Luton, Pisa and Dublin.

In a statement on Thursday, Ryanair said that on a year round basis, it will fly a daily service from Luton, London, England commencing on the 31st October 2006 and a three times weekly service from Pisa, Italy starting on the 31st October 2006. A three times weekly service from Dublin, Ireland will kick off on the 9th February 2007.

These routes are a direct response to the Maltese Government’s initiative to attract low fare airlines to the island. The Government has accepted in full Ryanair’s proposals and the airline is now confirming the commencement dates and frequency of these services.

Commenting on the announcement of the new routes, Ryanair’s Deputy Chief Executive, Michael Cawley said that Ryanair expects to carry over 85,000 tourists into Malta bringing total revenue of in excess of €36m in related spend, resulting in the creation of 300 new jobs directly and indirectly at Malta International Airport.

In turn, persons booking their flight with Ryanair by Monday 11th October will not pay any fares to fly to Malta, save for taxes and two-way charges. Although the first flight the company will make to Malta will take place in over a month’s time, the company is expecting a big demand for its offer.

As Ryanair launches its routes to Malta, total number of routes served by the low-cost carrier will increase to 379. Malta will in turn become the 24th country in which the company operates.

Malta is currently awaiting easyJet to annouce it's routes from Malta. easyJet was another low-cost airline which recived the givernment's go ahead to operate new routes to Malta.
