Tax bands revised in Budget 2007
The third budget speech for Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and also the third one for Malta as a member of the European Union, was delivered on October 18, 2006. Among the most prominent measures were the revision of tax bands and the unchanged increase in the cost of living increase at Lm 2.25c, with employees receiving Lm 1.75c as well as Lm0.50c granted last year after the introduction of the fuel surcharge last year.

Low-cost airlines bring hope for tourism

The tourism industry was given a boost in October after a gloomy outlook during the earlier months of 2006. The low-cost carriers Ryanair, Meridiana, Centralwings and Germanwings were expected to fly 20,000 passengers towards Malta by the time 2006 draws to an end, with Ryanair, accounting for another 90,000 expected visitors by the end of 2007, after the airline launches the services of its third route in from Dublin in February. In turn, interest has been expressed in operating further routes to and from Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Poland.

Preparations for euro changeover continue

Malta continued to gear up for the adoption of the Euro single currency, with January 1, 2008 seeming more and more the likely date for the changeover. However in 2006 there was not full confirmation yet, as the final go-ahead will come from Brussels in mid-2007. Although the Maltese government forged ahead with preparations, doubts over whether Malta would fulfill the stringent financial criteria for adoption were still not dissipated during the year, although the latest signs are positive.
