Changeover from the Maltese Lira to the Euro
In May the European Commission announced that Malta had fulfilled the necessary criteria to adopt the euro currency on the January 1st 2008. Preparations for the changeover to the euro in Malta thus accelerated and the National Euro Changeover Committee began the final and crucial phase of transition. The first euro coins with the Maltese symbols were minted and distributed, the first euro banknotes arrived amid stringent security, and the media campaign to information the public was at its highest.

The Budget 2008
The 2008 Budget presented on October 15 by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi reflected the upbeat mood of the Government induced by the improved performance of the Maltese economy over the last year. Primarily, the Budget aimed to reduce the budget deficit by LM 20 million and to increase investment in the economy and to generate wealth for the future by supporting industry, tourism, the infrastructure, schools and the environment. Critics said the budget measures were ‘too little, too late’ in view of the upcoming general elections.

Good summer for tourism
After suffering one of its worst years in 2006, the tourism industry experiences a strong recovery in summer 2007 with increases in tourist arrivals and accommodation occupancy rates.
