Malta has its first Maltese saint
San Gorg Preca
The year 2007 will be especially remembered for the canonisation of Malta’s first saint, Dun Gorg Preca on June 3, 2007. Thousands of Maltese pilgrims attended the canonisation ceremony in Rome where Pope Benedict XVI called on the Maltese to recognise San Gorg as their ‘second father after St. Paul’. The late Pope John Paul II had beautified Dun Gorg during his second and last visit to Malta in May, 2001. The scientifically unexplainable cure of a child born with serious health problems in the same year was attributed to an interception by the M.U.S.E.U.M. founder.

Malta's joins the Schengen area in December

Malta together with Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia and the Czech Republic officially entered the Schengen area on December 21, 2007. The accession brings about the end of sea and land borders between these countries and the other EU members of the Schengen area. Air travel however is to be opened up from March 30 2008. However illegal immigration and other criminal activity are regarded by some as the price Europe will pay for this expansion.

Explosions in fireworks factories leave several dead
    San Gorg Preca
2007 will be sadly remembered by fireworks enthusiasts for the eight victims in three separate explosions at St Helen’s Fireworks Factory in the limits of Xwieki in Gharghur, St Catherine's fireworks factory explosion at Tal-Qortin area in Zurrieq and St. Michael's fireworks factory in Lija. Fiver died in the explosion at the St. Helen’s factory alone. The fatalities led to an outcry in favour of more safety measures, which led to the Pyrotechnics Commission to submit a report, proposing better safety measures, in December.

    Hundreds more illegal immigrants arrive
    San Gorg Preca
While the influx of illegal immigrants in Malta continued in 2007, various international organisations called on the Maltese authorities to reserve a better treatment for these illegal immigrants. Patrols by EU agency FRONTEX left a mark and more funds were voted for the agency’s patrols in the Mediterranean in 2008.

Months of preparation and expectations were blown away in three minutes during the semi-final of Eurovision Song Contest in May 2007. Malta’s entry, Olivia Lewis with the song Vertigo, failed to make it to the Eurovision final, the first failure for a Maltese song since 1991.

Opposition and MLP Leader Dr Alfred Sant undergoes major surgery

On December 26, the Malta Labour Party unexpectedly announced that its leader Dr Alfred Sant would undergo major surgery the following day. Prof Anthony Zammit led the team that carried out the ‘major’ operation. His condition after the operation was termed as ‘stable’ and his medical condition as ‘very satisfactory’. Medical bulletins on Dr Sant’s health were issued daily, amid speculation on his role in view of the upcoming general elections to be held by summer 2008.

    Mater Dei hospital finally inaugurated

Mater Dei hospital was finally inaugurated in June, when contractor Skanska handed it over to the Maltese Government almost 15 years after the project started. However it did not receive its first bed-ridden patients before November. Costing over Lm200 million, much more than expected, Mater Dei continued to create controversy even after its opening, mainly due to teething problems. Maybe its first prominent patient was Opposition and MLP Leader Dr Alfred Sant in late December.
