Contenders for the post of Leader of the Malta Labour Party
George Abela (1948 - )
Abela was born and bred in Qormi and is today married to Margaret (nee Gauci) and have two children, Robert and Maria.
His education includes a BA in Arts, a Diploma as Notary Public and a doctorate of Laws from the University of Malta.
In 1975 he became the legal advisor of the General Workers Union, a post he kept for 25 years. In 1982 he was appointed President of the Malta Football Association and served in that position for ten years.
In 1992 he was elected Deputy Leader of the Malta Labour Party responsible for Party Affairs and after the MLP won the 1996 elections he was appointed legal consulent for the Prime Minister Dr Alfred Sant.
He resigned as a consultant in April 1998 and was against the MLP going for a snap election, thus resigning his post as deputy leader in July. Since then he has held no post within the MLP.
Evarist Bartolo (1952 - )
Bartolo was born and raised in Mellieha and as a youth was involved in a number of Christian organization. He is now married to Gillian (nee Sammut) and they have two children, Katrin and Louisa.
His education includes a Baccalaureate (Hons) degree in English Literature from the University of Malta, a diploma in journalism from Stanford University and a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Cardiff.
Bartolo was first elected in parliament in 1992 and has been working mostly in education, European affairs and tourism. Between 1996 and 1998 he served as Minister of Education and National Culture.
In the last general elections he was elected from two districts, the 10th (Gzira, Pemboke, Sliema, St Julians) and the 12th (Mellieha, St Paul’s Bay and Naxxar).
Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, (1958 - )
Coleiro Preca was born in Qormi.
Her education includes a BA in Legal and Humanistic Studies (International Studies) and Diploma Notary Public. She is currently reading for LL.D.
Coleiro Preca’s political career goes back to 1982 when she was appointed as a member of the National Executive. Since then, she was appointed in various other posts including as Assistant General Secretary and General Secretary of the Party and up to this date remains the only woman to have served in such a senior post of a Maltese political party.
She has served as a parliamentarian since 1998 and as MP Coleiro Preca served as Shadow Minister for Social Policy and as member of the Parliamentary Permanent Committee for Social Affairs.
In the general elections 2008 she was the first elected MP.
Michael Falzon (1961 - )
Michael Falzon was born and bred in Sliema. He is today married to Anna (née Lia) and they have two children, Martina and Nathaniel.
Falzon’s education includes a baccalaureate in legal and humanistic studies, Diploma as Notary Public and a doctorate in Law awarded by the University of Malta. Dr Falzon is also an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, ACIB.
His political career goes back to 1993 when he was appointed Election Manager of the Malta Labour Party. He also served as the Party’s international secretary between 1998 and 2003. In 2003 Falzon was elected Deputy Leader for Party Affairs.
In the general elections of 2008 he was elected on two districts, the second (Vittoriosa, Senglea, Cospicua, Zabbar, Kalkara and Xgħajra) and the tenth (Gzira, Pembroke, Sliema and St. Julians).
Joseph Muscat (1974 – )
Muscat was born in Pieta’ and lives in Burmarrad.
His education includes a baccalaureate (Hons) in Public Policy, a Masters degree in European Studies and a doctorate in Economics, all from the University of Malta.
Following Alfred Sant’s appointment as leader of the labour party, Muscat became involved in the party’s media and has been active in the party ever since. In 1995 he was elected to the Labour Party’ National Executive. He was also education secretary before the 2003 general election.
In 2004, he successfully contested the elections for European Parliament. Among his most important roles as an MEP he is Vice-chairman for the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. Muscat is also a substitute for the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection, vice-chair of the delegation for relations with Belarus, and a substitute for the delegation for relations with the countries of south-east Europe.
