The third budget speech for Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and also the third one for Malta as a member of the European Union was delivered on October 18, 2006.

Expectations created by media reports and hints from the Prime Ministers before the budget speech were somehwat met. The tax cuts for middle-income earners and an increase in salaries of Lm1.75 a week were mentioned as expected but there was no hint of a reduction in the surcharge on electricity and water bills introduced last year to make up for the hefty increases in international oil prices.

The Prime Minister also said the economic progress registered so far makes it more likely Malta will adopt the Euro currency on January 1 2008.
