The origins of this popular feast can be traced back
into the 15th century.
Mnarja is rooted in Maltese culture and tradition.
This feast has always been considered as a special day for everyone, particularly
for the peasants who used to have their annual break at this time of year
and try to enjoy it to the full.
In these pages we will be
looking at the evolution
of this feast and how the Maltese and Gozitans celebrate it today:
from the strictly religious functions of Mdina to the almost pagan customs
of Buskett and the colourful
celebrations of Nadur.
You can also watch a video
interview about Mnarja with Tony Terribile, a scholar of Maltese traditions.
