    34 months of negotiations

    Following the reactivation of Malta's application to join the European Union after the September 1998 snap election, Union leaders at the Helsinki Summit formally invited Malta, along with another five candidates to start negotiations

    This was preceded by an intensive screening process of Malta's laws.

    Negotiations with Malta were started on February 15, 2000 and were concluded on December 13, 2002.
